Sport Pilot Certified Flight Instructor (CFIS) Privileges

What is a certificated Sport Pilot Flight Instructor (CFIS)?

A FAA Sport Pilot Certified Flight Instructor (CFIS) has privileges similar to other FAA certificated flight instructors (CFI); however, he or she may only instruct in the category of light- sport aircraft in which he or she is qualified and operates under FAR 61 Subpart K rather than Subpart H. A CFIS may also perform proficiency checks to add a category or class to the certificate of an existing Sport Pilot and Sport Pilot CFIS.

Prerequisites to be a Sport Pilot Certified Flight Instructor (CFIS)

The applicant must hold a sport pilot or higher pilot certificate with the category and class privileges as appropriate to the flight instructor privileges sought. The candidate must be at least 18 years old.

Experience Requirements

Airplane and weight-shift-control category instructors need 150 hours of flight time as a pilot, which must include at least:

(i) 100 hours of flight time as pilot in command in powered aircraft,
(ii) 50 hours of flight time in category,
(iii) 25 hours of cross-country flight time,
(iv) 10 hours of cross-country flight time in category, and
(v) 15 hours of flight time as pilot in command in category that is a
light-sport aircraft.

Additional Instructor Skills

Sport pilots must build additional skills in the Fundamentals of Instruction and Technical Subject Areas. All the sport pilot tasks must be mastered to:

  • Perform the maneuvers and procedures at a higher level than the sport pilot tolerances.
  • Have instructional knowledge of tasks.
  • Have knowledge of common errors and be able to identify, analyze, and correct mistakes.

Can a CFIA train a pilot for the CFI Sport Instructor Written, FOI, and Practical tests?

If so, does that CFI have to have his license for 24 months, and have 200 hours o dual given?

    Thanks

  2. Paul says:

Yes, A CFI private airplane can do the same instruction as a CFI sport with no additional training or endorsements. No the CFI does not have to wait 24 months or give 200 hours dual. He/she is allowed to operate under the Sport pilot flight instructors requlations for teaching sport pilots.

  3. Paul says:

Is there a specific knowledge test for LSA instructors, besides the FOI? I am currently studying for the FOI and can only find test preparation materials for “Flight Instructor Airplane.”

  4. Paul says:

Yes there is a seperate written/computer test for the CFI sport pilot airplane. It is in the ASA CFI Test prep Book or Prepware CD at http://www.ap-stores.com

  8. charles noel says:

Can I receive all of my ppl instruction in an LSA (to keep the costs down), assuming my instructor is a CFIA not CFIS, and then transition over to a cessna 150 or 172 several hours prior to my check ride to become comfortable with the heavier aircraft and take the check ride in the 150 or 172 ?

  9. Tom Fitz says:

I am a advanced ground instructor. Have completed my test for Light Sport instructor. Do I have to take the FOI test over again even though I needed it for my advanced ground instructor certificate?

  10. Paul says:

    Tom,
No you do not have to take the FOI test again.
